[ It should be awkward, Steve is self-aware enough to know that. No one stares someone else in the face for this long without some kind of intent, and that intent is there, brewing somewhere in the pit of his stomach. They're out in the middle of nowhere, which means that no one would have to know if he gave into that urge to lean forward and touch his lips against Sam's. They could pretend it never happened, if they wanted to.

Except then Sam says something, breaks the illusion and causes Steve to scoot back half an inch in surprise and embarrassment. There's not a ton of space on the bed for both of them to begin with, so now he may as well be half off of it. ]

Yeah, of course. [ Steve looks anywhere but at Sam. At the creaky ceiling fan overhead, at the bathroom door in the corner, at their two duffel bags seated next to each other on the stained carpet. ] It's just...

[ He has to say something. Something that's not "I was thinking about what it would be like if I kissed you." Steve presses his teeth down into his bottom lip and then lets out a breath. ] I just never thought I'd be this comfortable in a place like this, I guess.

[ Steve could thank Sam again, that always goes over well. But he'd rather not make the situation worse than it already is, so he only shrugs and looks back to the rolling credits on the crackly TV screen. ]
