she'd been investigating an anomaly for the professor, ready to head back when the source of it turned out to be absolutely nothing. at least that was until everything started going wrong. her contact was cut off, and when they'd shown up in her hotel room--
jean had been able to feel the power radiating from them, having only a moment to try and defend herself before they attacked. it didn't work and when jean came too they were gone. clearly they didn't like the attention but at least she knew that the professor had been right. something was there and its power scared her.
stark tower was easy to find. until she'd gotten there jean had no idea if steve would even be there. thankfully he was. rather than going up she waited downstairs in the lobby, instead sending a telepathic message to him )
( Steve? I need your help. )

They're debriefing a recent mission, though, something minor but still enough to have brought Steve over. He doesn't usually skip out on Avengers business if he's in town, especially since so many of them are scattered to other parts of the world.
He's in the middle of a meeting with Hill and a few other SHIELD agents when the "call" comes through. A mental transmission like this is still pretty unexpected for him; no one else on his team is a telepath. Jean wouldn't do this lightly, though, and so he mentally responds as best as he can. It's taken some practice. ]
( Jean? Are you nearby? )
[ There's a range on this, right? ]

( I'm downstairs. There's a situation. )
( of course there was, though jean had never come by for a social visit before. she'd say one day but they both knew that that would probably be unlikely )

So if she's here, it's serious. A "situation" could be just about anything, but Steve would rather get the details in person. ]
( I'll be down in a few minutes. )
[ The debrief is almost over anyway, so it isn't hard for him to explain that something's come up and he needs to bow out early. No one really questions it; again, this is just part of their lives.
As promised, he makes it down to the lobby of the tower, and after that it doesn't take long to find Jean. Steve quickly moves over to her. ]
I can take us somewhere quiet where we can talk, or do we need to get moving?
no subject
jean offers him a friendly smile, a brief thanks before jumping in at his question )
We've got time to talk first.
( it might not be much before they started to lose the trail again but they needed to come up with some form of a plan before jumping in if they wanted to succeed )
Thanks for agreeing to help.
( though she guessed that he'd say 'any time', just as she'd always agree to help him )

[ Steve can already tell that Jean has a lot on her mind; he doesn't need powers of telepathy to pick up on that. Since she wants to talk here first, he directs them back to the elevator. A few people in the lobby are trying to subtly watch them both, but Steve won't speak of anything until they get somewhere private, as he suggested.
The elevator doors open and he steps inside, hitting the button for the floor that houses his room. Not that he explains where he's taking her, but it will become clear soon enough. ]
I'd ask you how you're doing, but...
[ He smiles wryly and bows his head, shaking it. If she's here, it means that things haven't been going well. ]

( jean leans back against the elevator wall. at least, other than this, things had been going well for a while. the government was never happy but they hadn't bothered the mansion at least. hopefully they could resolve this situation to keep that fact the same )
What did you say to the others?
( she'd felt the team around him )
no subject
[ Steve still doesn't know, but he figures that they'll go over that soon enough, and then he'll have an idea of what to say to people like Tony and Natasha when they get nosy. Natasha always manages to figure things out even when Steve attempts to lie or withhold things from her, but he'll do his best to keep Jean's secrets.
The elevator dings and he leads them down the hall to his room. It requires a fingerprint and optical scan before the door will open, but open it does, and Steve waves Jean inside. ]
no subject
( jean waits until they're inside before she speaks. she trusts most of his team, at least their judgements. they're in a similar business, whether or not they always agree doesn't mean that it doesn't count when it matters )
I was tracking a mutant for the Professor. It was giving off a strange power reading. I hadn't been able to find anything and then it found me.
( which he can note from the light bruising on her face )

He motions for Jean to take a seat and leans himself up against the desk, arms crossing over his chest as he nods along with her explanation. ]
Did you get an idea of what its power was? [ If there was an altercation, chances are that she did. ] And I assume it got away. [ Given that Jean is calling the mutant "it," Steve has to wonder how humanoid it is. ]
no subject
( and she's only a little bitter about that. jean would like to say that it's only because she was surprised that it did but honestly it could be more -- psychic shielding? some resistance to her own power? she didn't get long enough to see )
It's a level four mutant -- strong. From what I could sense the mutation is destructive, on what scale I don't have an answer but I wouldn't hesitate to say that it could be massive.
( building leveling, perhaps greater )
I couldn't get inside its head and I think that's what the Professor was having trouble with too. That's why he couldn't get a read on it.
no subject
I can see why you wanted backup on this, though I'm not sure how much help I'll be.
[ It's not like he has any abilities that allow him to read someone's mind. All he can do is hope to match the mutant in brute strength.
His eyes flick back toward Jean. Daunting as this sounds, he has no intention of backing down from it. ] Any idea where it went, or how we can find it?
