[ While Helen insists that she doesn't expect Steve to help her, she would have known when she first made contact that he wouldn't say no. That's not in his nature, so the fact that she took this option means that it's serious.

It's true that the artifact doesn't sound particularly dangerous with that brief description, but Steve knows all too well how something mundane can turn out to be world-breaking.
